Abstract

Purpose –Character education is a fundamental aspect in shaping individuals with noble morals and responsible behavior in the contemporary era. The thoughts of prominent figures such as Ahmad Amin and Ki Hajar Dewantara provide significant contributions to understanding and implementing character education. This study aims to analyze the ideas of Ahmad Amin and Ki Hajar Dewantara regarding character education and their relevance in addressing moral challenges in the modern era.

Design/methods/approach–This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a literature review approach. Data were collected from the primary works of both figures and secondary literature related to their thoughts on character education. Data analysis was conducted through reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing.

Findings–The findings reveal that Ahmad Amin emphasizes character formation through intentions and habitual actions as the foundation of human behavior. Meanwhile, Ki Hajar Dewantara developed the Trikon Theory (Continuity, Convergence, and Concentrism) and the Leadership Trilogy (Ing Ngarsa Sung Tuladha, Ing Madya Mangun Karsa, Tut Wuri Handayani) as the main principles of character education. These two perspectives are highly relevant for application in modern educational systems, particularly in building a generation with strong character, high morality, and the ability to face global challenges.

Research implications/limitations–The implications of this research provide a conceptual foundation for the development of holistic and contextual character education policies. However, the limitation of this study lies in its theoretical focus, which requires further empirical research in various educational institutions.

Originality/value–This study offers originality by combining the ideas of Ahmad Amin and Ki Hajar Dewantara to formulate principles of character education applicable to contemporary contexts.
