Abstract

Purpose– Character education is a key component in shaping the moral and ethical personality of individuals. In the context of Islamic education, the desired character is reflected in the teachings of the hadith, particularly those compiled by Imam An-Nawawi in his book Riyadhus Shalihin. This study aims to analyze the concept of character education in the hadiths of Riyadhus Shalihin and examine its relevance to contemporary character education.

Design/methods/approach– This study uses a library research method with a qualitative approach. Data was collected from the Riyadhus Shalihin and related literature, and analyzed using a descriptive-analytical technique.

Findings – The findings indicate that key values such as honesty, patience, responsibility, sincerity, and empathy in Riyadhus Shalihin are highly relevant in addressing the moral and ethical challenges in the modern world. These values form a holistic framework for character education, involving both personal and social dimensions.

Research implications/limitations– The implications of this study highlight the need for collaboration between formal education and Islamic character values to address the moral crisis.

Originality/value– This research provides original contributions by linking Islamic character education with the challenges of modern education. The new findings suggest that the values in Riyadhus Shalihin can be integrated into formal education systems as an effort to instill character in contemporary educational frameworks.
