Islamic Character Education Based on Hadith: A Comparative Study Between the Books of Riyadhus Shalihin and Ihya Ulumuddin

Purpose –Islamic character education is one of the key aspects in shaping a Muslim's noble personality, particularly in facing social and moral challenges in the modern era. This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis of the concepts of character education found in two classical Islamic books, namely Riyadhus Shalihin by Imam An-Nawawi and Ihya Ulumuddin by Imam Al-Ghazali.
Design/methods/approach – The research method used is library research, which involves reviewing the contents of both books and identifying the character values taught through a hadith-based approach.
Findings – The study found that although both books share the same goal of shaping Islamic character, they employ different approaches. Riyadhus Shalihin emphasizes practical daily practices through normative hadith teachings, while Ihya Ulumuddin places more emphasis on the Sufistic aspects and the purification of the soul (tazkiyatun nafs)..
Research implications/limitations – The research indicates that the integration of both practical and Sufistic approaches offers a holistic model of character education, which is relevant for implementation in both formal and non-formal educational settings.
Originality/value – The originality of this study lies in its comparative analysis of these two classical books as primary sources for comprehensive and balanced Islamic character education, providing a new contribution to the development of curricula for character education based on Islamic values.
