Abstract

Purpose–Hadith learning is a fundamental component of Islamic education, particularly in pesantren, aimed at shaping students’ character based on Islamic values. The Modern Islamic Boarding School of Darur Ridwan Banyuwangi has adopted the direct method as an innovative approach to enhance understanding and internalization of religious teachings. This study aims to describe the application of the direct method in hadith learning, evaluate its strengths and challenges, and analyze its impact on students.

Design/methods/approach –The research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews with teachers and students, and document analysis. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model, including data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing.

Findings –The findings reveal that the direct method effectively improves students' Arabic proficiency, strengthens their contextual understanding of hadith, and facilitates the internalization of moral values. However, challenges include variations in students' abilities, limited teacher competence, and insufficient supporting resources.

Research implications/limitations –The study highlights the need for teacher training and curriculum development to optimize the implementation of the direct method in modern pesantren.

Originality/value–The originality of this research lies in its in-depth exploration of integrating the direct method into hadith learning, a subject rarely studied in pesantren contexts. It offers practical insights for developing more relevant and applicable teaching methods in Islamic education.
