Abstract

Purpose– Lifelong learning is an essential concept in Islamic education, as emphasized in the Qur'an, particularly in Surah Al-Alaq verses 1-5. These verses contain the command "Iqra" (read), highlighting the importance of learning as an act of worship and a human responsibility to continuously seek knowledge. This study aims to explore how these verses can serve as a foundation for developing the concept of lifelong learning in contemporary Islamic education.

Design/methods/approach– This research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method. The analysis is conducted through a study of both classical and modern tafsir of Surah Al-Alaq verses 1-5.

Findings– The analysis reveals that the command "Iqra" holds profound meaning, encompassing the exploration of knowledge beyond formal learning. These verses encourage the awareness that knowledge is a gift from Allah that must be utilized responsibly. The findings also indicate that integrating the concept of lifelong learning into Islamic education can strengthen the development of character, critical thinking skills, and moral competence, which are relevant to the demands of the times.

Research implications/limitations – The implications of this research suggest the need for a more flexible and value-based Islamic education system to support lifelong learning. This can be implemented through a curriculum that integrates technology and media as tools for disseminating knowledge, as well as recognizing the importance of spiritual and social potential in the learning process.

Originality/value – This study contributes new insights by reinforcing the relevance of the lifelong learning concept within the Islamic context and offering a new perspective for contemporary Islamic education in shaping a generation that continues to learn and contribute positively to society.
