The Implementation of Aqidah Learning Based on the Direct Method: A Case Study at Modern Islamic Boarding School Darur Ridwan Banyuwangi

Purpose–Aqidah education plays a crucial role in shaping the personality and spirituality of students in pesantren. However, traditional teaching methods often face challenges in engaging students to comprehend the abstract concepts within aqidah. This study aims to explore the implementation of the Direct Method in teaching aqidah at Pondok Pesantren Modern Darur Ridwan Banyuwangi and identify its advantages and challenges.
Design/methods/approach –The study employed a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, direct observations, and document analysis. Thematic analysis was applied to explore the experiences of teachers and students in the Direct Method-based learning process.
Findings – The findings reveal that the Direct Method enhances students' understanding of aqidah concepts through active and applicable direct interactions. This method also strengthens the personal relationship between teachers and students, fostering a collaborative and inspiring learning environment. However, challenges such as limited time and the need for adequate teacher training to improve implementation effectiveness were also identified.
Research implications/limitations–This study provides significant implications for developing innovative Islamic value-based teaching methods in pesantren by emphasizing the integration of modern approaches with traditional values.
Originality/value–The originality of this research lies in its exploration of the Direct Method within the context of aqidah education in a modern pesantren, offering a novel contribution to the literature on Islamic education.
