Purpose –The implementation of effective teaching methods in Islamic education is a strategic effort to enhance learning quality. This study aims to examine the application of a Direct Method-based Islamic History learning model at Pondok Pesantren Modern Darur Ridwan Banyuwangi. The Direct Method is known for its ability to encourage active interaction between teachers and students through direct engagement, making it relevant in the context of modern Islamic boarding schools.
Design/methods/approach–This research employs a qualitative methodology with a case study approach. Data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis and were analyzed using descriptive-analytical techniques.
Findings – The findings reveal that the implementation of the Direct Method in this pesantren effectively improves students' understanding of Islamic History through interactive practices such as group discussions and historical event simulations. However, challenges such as limited skilled human resources and curriculum adaptation issues were identified. This study provides practical implications for developing learning models in modern pesantrens and theoretical relevance in integrating classical learning methods with contemporary approaches.
Research implications/limitations- This research is limited to a single case study, which restricts generalizability to other pesantrens.
Originality/value – Nevertheless, its originality lies in the in-depth exploration of the application of the Direct Method in Islamic History learning, an area rarely explored in previous studies.
