Abstract

Purpose–This study aims to explore and analyze the concept of wisdom (hikmah) in Islamic education based on the interpretations of Tafsir Al-Qurtubi and Tafsir Ibn Kathir regarding Surah Luqman verses 12-19. The concept of hikmah in these verses encompasses the instillation of tawhid (monotheism) values, gratitude, respect for parents, and the development of character based on the teachings of the Qur’an.

Design/methods/approach– This research employs a library research method with a descriptive-analytical approach, analyzing the interpretations of these two primary tafsirs to understand the classical scholars’ perspectives on hikmah in the context of education.

Findings–The findings indicate that the concept of hikmah in both Tafsir Al-Qurtubi and Tafsir Ibn Kathir shares core elements, namely the emphasis on tawhid, ethics, and good character. However, there are differences in the emphasis on practical and moral aspects: Tafsir Al-Qurtubi focuses more on social ethics and interpersonal relations, while Ibn Kathir highlights the practical application of tawhid values in everyday life. The application of the concept of hikmah in education points toward a holistic approach, involving dialogical methods, teacher role-modeling, and hands-on experiences to deeply instill Qur’anic values.

Research implications/limitations–This study contributes to enriching the literature on Qur’an-based Islamic education. However, it is limited to classical tafsirs and does not integrate contemporary tafsir perspectives, which could provide additional insights.

Originality/value– This research offers a new approach by integrating classical tafsirs into modern Islamic educational practice, positioning hikmah as a fundamental value relevant to the development of student character in the present era.
