Abstract

Purpose –This study examines the implementation of the Direct Method in Arabic language teaching through both theoretical and practical approaches. The method has long been recognized as an effective approach to foreign language learning due to its emphasis on using the target language directly, without translation. However, despite the recognition of its advantages, its application in Arabic language learning has not been explored in depth. The purpose of this study is to investigate the basic principles of the Direct Method, its advantages and disadvantages, as well as the factors affecting its successful implementation in Arabic language teaching.

Design/methods/approach–The research employs a library research method, involving an in-depth analysis of relevant literature, including previous studies and existing theories. The data collected was then analyzed descriptively and systematically to provide a comprehensive understanding of the application of this method in the context of Arabic language teaching.

Findings–The results of the study indicate that the Direct Method effectively improves speaking and listening skills, particularly for intermediate and advanced learners. However, for beginners, this method requires adjustments, such as the use of visual aids and additional explanations. The success of implementing this method heavily depends on teacher competence, student motivation, and the support of technological facilities in learning. Additionally, the findings suggest that integrating technology and adapting the method according to the learning context, whether for religious or academic purposes, is essential to enhance Arabic language learning outcomes.

Research implications/limitations – this research is limited to a literature review and does not include more in-depth field studies. Therefore, further research is needed to confirm these findings through empirical data in real-world settings.

Originality/value – This study provides important implications for the development of Arabic language curricula and teacher training programs focused on implementing the Direct Method.
